LIIAR analysis

NME – 25 august 2012. Price £2.40

Language – The photograph is split into four sections, there are four individual pictures of the band separately, and this could be to show that all members of the band are significant, instead of there being one main figure head of the band. The colour theme goes with the Leeds and Reading festival logo, yellow, red and black. The Leeds and Reading festival is featured in this magazine, with a 22 page special, so the colour theme fits the feature.

Front cover of magazine
The NME logo is placed in the left hand corner, like the usual convention of a magazine, its plain white, which makes it not stand out, this could show that NME is a well-known brand, which indicates that it doesn’t have to standout for people to know what it is. The layout is very un-conventional as there are no article previews down the left hand side, instead there are two article previews on the right, and this could be because NME want more focus on the two main features on the magazine, The Vaccines and Leeds and Reading festival. On the contents page, its very different from a conventional contents page. It’s all over the place, with no real order, with bigger pictures being bigger stories. The colour theme of the contents matches that of the double page spread. White and red and black, so this shows a running theme. The photo of The Vaccines on the double page spread is a long shot, it looks like the scene is derelict, like they are on their own which enforces the quote on the double page spread “We’re a gang now… it’s us against the world”

Institution – NME stands for New Musical Express. NME is published by IPC Media (Time inc.). The editor of NME is Mark Williams. The first issue was released on 7th March 1952.

Double page spread
Ideology - Promotes new indie music. NME focuses on bands that are yet to make it, promoting them. 70% male audience, 30% female audience.

Audience - 16-25

Representation - NME doesn’t always follow the conventions of normal music magazines and this could show its abnormal, and like's to not follow the crowd. People who listen to indie bands would buy this magazine as if focuses on what they like.
